Europe is once again on high alert as a resurgent Islamic State (IS) begins to re-establish itself, with its operations shifting to Somalia. According to the latest threat assessment by the Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV), Europe must prepare for a fresh wave of jihadist attacks.
The intelligence services have observed that Somalia, now serving as a base of operations for IS, is attracting jihadists from Europe due to its accessibility. Where Syria was once the primary destination for European jihadists, Somalia has now become the preferred conflict zone. While Gaza has emerged as a symbolic rallying point, access to the war-torn enclave remains difficult, forcing jihadis to seek alternative regions like Somalia.
IS-K and the Afghan Connection
The resurgence of the Islamic State isn’t limited to Africa. The AIVD, the Dutch intelligence service, has also highlighted the growing influence of IS-K (Islamic State Khorasan Province), the faction operating from Afghanistan. This group has demonstrated an ability to extend its networks into Europe, where several arrests have been made.
The dismantling of IS-K cells and networks in recent months highlight the persistent and evolving nature of the threat. IS-K, known for its brutal and ambitious tactics, remains intent on exporting its terror to Western targets.
