Brussels, Belgium — January 6, 2025: A potentially deadly attack was narrowly avoided this morning when a “radicalized” man in his twenties armed with a knife attempted to break into the offices of Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. The incident occurred at 16 rue de la Loi as the individual shouted “Allah Akbar,” an Islamic war cry, before being subdued by military police. Authorities have not released his name, sparking criticism over transparency in such cases.
A Known Threat Escalates
According to officials, the assailant had already been flagged by authorities and was the subject of a Nixon procedure, indicating prior psychiatric evaluation mandated by judicial authorities. Additionally, sources revealed the man had previously been arrested for making threats against the U.S. Embassy. Despite these warning signs, the individual managed to approach the heavily secured Chancellery with a steak knife, posing a grave threat to public safety.
Swift and Decisive Response
The attempted attack was thwarted by military police stationed at the site, who quickly overpowered the man before he could cause harm. Police spokespersons confirmed no injuries were reported among the officers or civilians. The suspect was immediately taken into custody, and an investigation into his motives and affiliations is underway.
