Houthi rebels in Yemen have, for the first time, launched surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) at U.S. military aircraft.
On February 19, an American F-16 fighter jet was targeted while flying over the Red Sea near Yemen’s coastline but the missile did not make contact. Additionally, a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone was fired upon in a separate incident. These attacks mark a notable shift in the Houthis’ capabilities and pose increased risks to U.S. operations in the region.

According to Fox News:
Now there is a policy debate at the highest levels of the U.S. military about what is the best way to counter the Houthis, which the Trump administration has put back on the State Department’s terror list.
The debate now is whether to carry out a more traditional counterterrorism approach to the Houthis, with persistent strikes targeting the individuals planning and carrying out the ongoing attacks, or whether to take a more defensive approach and keep going after Houthi infrastructure and weapons-storage facilities.
The Houthis’ acquisition and use of SAMs, likely supplied by Iran, have raised concerns about the safety of U.S. and allied aircraft operating in the area. The U.S. military is currently assessing the situation to determine appropriate responses to this emerging threat.
These developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with the Houthis intensifying their military activities along the Red Sea, including attacks on merchant vessels. The U.S. continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance to protect its assets and personnel.
Erase them and all of their infrastructure to wage war. Same with the Palestinians.
yup, Iran too
And the US shot down a Chinese balloon in US airspace, why the hypocrisy? 🤔
This is a perfect time for Trump to set an example.
They’re not allowed to defend their own airspace? The USA does.
Steve,
The United States is a recognized nation-state, bound by treaties, international law, and strategic alliances. It is not a band of insurgents or a proxy militia serving the interests of a foreign power.
The Houthis, by contrast, are an Iranian-backed militant group that seized territory through war and are not recognized as the legitimate government of Yemen. Their claim to “airspace” is as valid as that of any rebel faction, warlord, or cartel holding land by force.
Knowing which side you are on is not a matter of idle philosophy but of survival. It seems you have yet to reckon with this. Or worse, you have, and you have chosen poorly.
It is a shame for a man to think himself clever while unwittingly serving another’s cause. Whether through ignorance, contrarianism, or misplaced idealism, you have, in effect, argued for those who would sooner see you erased from the very ground you stand on.
So, if we don’t recognize the government we can treat the airspace as ours (or at least do what we want with it)?
The f16 and Reaper were not in Yemeni airspace! Thus, this is an act of pure belligerence. I vote for erasing the Houthis from the map, permanently.
Sounds like U.S. needs a little ‘HARM’ deterrent for its forces.
Could Israel have fired the missles?
I’m guessing it took less than an hour to make the decision of who to kill and how. Houthis done screwed the pooch.
